William Gilbert, an English physician and natural philosopher, is considered the father of magnetic studies. In his 1600 work "De Magnete," he described his experiments and observations on magnetism, proposing that the earth was itself a magnet with north and south poles. He also studied the lodestone, magnetizing iron to make compass needles, and discovered that magnets could attract or repel other magnets depending on their polarity.

This work continued with the contributions of fellow scientists such as Hans Christian Oersted, who discovered that a wire carrying an electric current could create a magnetic field, and James Clerk Maxwell, who formulated the equations that described the behavior of electromagnetic waves.
