Advantages of Alnico Magnets

01/

High Temperature Stability
One of the most significant advantages of alnico magnets is their ability to maintain magnetic properties at high temperatures. Alnico magnets can withstand temperatures of up to 500°C (930°F) without losing their magnetism, making them ideal for high-heat applications such as engines and turbines.

02/

Resistance to Demagnetization
Alnico magnets have high resistance to demagnetization, meaning they can retain their magnetism even in challenging environments. This property is especially important in applications that experience high external magnetic fields, such as electrical motors.

03/

Durability
Alnico magnets are known for their long-term durability, able to perform consistently over extended periods without significant loss of performance. Their robust construction ensures they can handle the wear and tear of industrial environments.

04/

Customizability
Alnico magnets can be manufactured in a wide range of shapes and sizes. Whether cast or sintered, they can be tailored to meet the specific needs of different applications. This flexibility makes them highly adaptable to a variety of industries.

Application of Alnico Magnets

Magnetic Separators

Alnico magnets are used in magnetic separators to separate magnetic materials from non-magnetic materials. They are used in applications such as recycling, mining, and food processing.

Electric Motors and Generators

Alnico magnets are commonly used in electric motors and generators due to their strong magnetic fields and high magnetic flux density. They are used to convert electrical energy into mechanical energy and vice versa.

Sensors

Alnico magnets are used in sensors to detect changes in magnetic fields. They are used in applications such as automotive sensors, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machines, and magnetic compasses.

Speakers and Microphones

Alnico magnets are used in speakers and microphones to convert electrical signals into sound waves and vice versa. They are used in applications such as audio systems, telephones, and hearing aids.

Holding and Lifting Magnets

Alnico magnets are used in holding and lifting magnets to hold or lift heavy objects. They are used in applications such as lifting magnets, magnetic chucks, and magnetic sweepers.

Manufacturing Process

Melting in Foundry Furnace
The first step uses raw materials in precise measurements in a top-loading induction furnace: aluminum, nickel, cobalt, iron, and trace elements. Above 1750°C, the metals melt down to form a uniform alloy.

Casting the Magnet Shapes

The metal is then poured into shell molds or green sand molds that are slightly bigger than the final magnet to allow for shrinkage. While cooling and solidifying, the outer mold shell either burns or crumbles away, liberating the rough cast magnets.

Fettling and Cleanup

The solidified magnets get cleaned off of any excess metal by grinding wheels. This process removes the runner gates and prepares the magnets for heat treatment.

Precision Grinding

To meet strict dimensional tolerances, the magnets are finely ground.

Quality Testing

Tools like hysteresis graph testers and Gauss meters are used to ensure magnetic strength and consistency.

Coating or Painting

If required, a protective or decorative coating is applied.

Final Magnetization

In the last step, magnets are placed in a magnetizer and hit with an intense electrical pulse to fully charge them.

Tips for Working with Alnico Magnets

If you're considering Alnico magnets for a project, here are some practical tips to get the most out of them:

Handle with Care: Use gloves and avoid dropping them to prevent chipping.

Choose the Right Grade: Alnico 5 is common for general use, while Alnico 8 offers higher coercivity for demanding applications.

Test for Your Environment: If your application involves extreme temperatures, verify the magnet's performance under those conditions.

Use appropriate storage: If using metal shelving, ensure the shelves are far enough apart to prevent the magnets from moving or jumping.

Testing Alnico Magnets

Some of the most common magnet testing techniques are:

Magnet Testing Technique

Importance of the Process

Hysteresis Loop Test

· Helps examine material properties

· Quantifying magnetic flux density with respect to applied magnet force

· By examining the size and shape of the curve, you can know the magnet’s quality.

Fluxmeter

· It measures a magnet’s flux

Magnetic field lines test

· You will examine the magnetic field lines which are part of quality testing

Gauss meter

· Determines magnetic field

· It depends on the hall effect

FAQ

Q: What are the main characteristics of alnico magnets?

A: Alnico magnets offer high magnetic strength, energies but low coercivities. They are less brittle than Rare Earth magnets, are highly resistant to corrosion, have excellent temperature stability and can be used at very high temperatures. Manufactured through either a casting or sintering process, they can be made into complex shapes (such as horseshoe shapes) that are not possible with other magnet materials.

Q: What grades & shapes are available for alnico magnets?

A: Grades 5 and 8 are the most commonly used Alnico grades. Non-standard shapes can be custom fabricated to blueprint specifications from raw stock in sintered, or cast forms, & we can custom manufacture virtually any shape & size to meet your specialty requirements. Send us a request for quote, and we'll work with you to determine the most economical way to manufacture your specialty project.

Q: Are there machining constraints for alnico magnets?

A: Alnico magnets are hard and brittle, and prone to chipping & cracking. They require very careful machining & it is not generally recommended that these materials be used for structural or decorative purposes. Machining or drilling cannot be accomplished by ordinary methods. Cutting & grinding should be done prior to magnetizing. Holes must be made by EDM methods. We are fully equipped to machine these materials to your blueprint specifications.

Q: Do alnico magnets require surface treatments?

A: Alnico magnets do not typically require a protective coating or plating since they exhibit excellent resistance to corrosion.

Q: What are some safety precautions that should be taken into consideration when working with alnico magnets?

A: Special care should be taken to assure that these magnets are not subjected to adverse repelling fields, since these could partially demagnetize the magnets. If Alnicos are partially demagnetized, they may be easily re-magnetized.

Q: What is the standard dimensional tolerance for alnico magnets?

A: Generally, the standard dimensional tolerance for Alnico Magnets is +/-0.005" on diameter, width & thickness dimensions and +/-0.015" on length dimensions.

Q: How do Alnico magnets compare to ceramic magnets?

A: Alnico magnets are stronger and more temperature-resistant than ceramic magnets but are more expensive. Ceramic magnets are better for low-cost, low-performance applications.

Q: Can Alnico magnets be remagnetized?

A: When we use alnico magnets, we should take extra care to make sure that they are not affected by the adverse repelling fields, which may partially demagnetize the magnets. If partially demagnetized, they can be easily remagnetized.

Q: What's the best way to store Alnico magnets?

A: Store them in pairs with opposite poles touching or use a keeper (a piece of iron) to complete the magnetic circuit. This prevents demagnetization.

Q: Do alnico magnets rust?

A: AlNiCo magnets are highly resistant to corrosion and will not corrode even if exposed to oil, solvents, gasoline, and alcohol.
